A woman charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left a 10-year-old boy with a traumatic brain injury was sentenced Monday to two years probation and 200 hours of community service.

Rebecca Smith, of Ingersoll, was charged with accessory after the fact, assaulting police, drug possession and letting an unlicensed person drive her vehicle.

Her husband, Toby Van Lieshout, pleaded guilty in January to failing to remain at the scene, careless driving and possession of marijuana.

Tyler Brooks was riding his bike on a Wexford Avenue sidewalk last fall when he was struck by a car Van Lieshout was driivng. He was left with a traumatic brain injury and remains in hospital in Toronto.

Smith's lawyer, Rob Kitto, had no comment on the case.

Family friend Tabitha Elford said justice was not served with the sentence.

"...We will all forever be Tyler's voice. The family is most definitely hurting and in a huge circle of support today."
