A man has died after debris that reportedly came loose from a southbound vehicle struck the windshield of his northbound work van as he travelled on Elgin Road southeast of London.
OPP Const. Kevin Howe says “We were advised that an object had left the roadway and struck an oncoming motor vehicle…it looked like a piece of steel roofing that had entered through the air. The vehicle then left the roadway and entered into a field.”
Police, fire and emergency crews were called to the scene to assist the seriously injured driver, but he died about two hours later in a London hospital.
Middlesex County OPP closed Elgin Road between Harrietsville Drive and Gladstone Drive just south of Dorchester around 2:20 p.m. on Thursday. It is expected to reopen around 9 p.m.
The provincial accident reconstruction unit has been called in to try to determine exactly what happened. Conditions in the area were windy and wet at the time.
Howe adds “Today is an example of it’s a very unfortunate set of circumstances that anything can happen at any time and we always have to be alert when we’re driving, unfortunately bad things happen.”
There is no word yet on the identity of the driver.
