After a recent stretch of clear skies and warm weather, Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for southern Ontario, with conditions favourable for thunderstorms and heavy rain.

The warning issued on Saturday morning says that “isolated thunderstorms will develop early this afternoon and continue into this evening.”

“Heavy downpours are expected with these thunderstorms, with rainfall amounts near 30 millimetres,” the statement adds.

Environment Canada says they’re concerned about rainfall in regions that could receive more than one thunderstorm, where rainfall amounts could exceed 50 millimeters in a short period of time.

Hail and strong winds are also possible if storms occur. Environment Canada warns that thunderstorms can also produce tornadoes.

People are advised to take cover immediately if they spot threatening weather approaching.
