Hoping for a permanent solution, Rostock residents were instead given a temporary one – and a glimmer of hope for something longer-lasting.

Perth East council voted Tuesday night in favour of letting community members manage the former Ellice Township hall.

There had been talk the facility would be closed due to budget constraints.

Instead, councillors agreed to leave the doors open for one year, in the hope the community could raise enough money to run the hall as an ongoing concern.

Keeping the doors open costs about $10,000 per year. In recent years, the facility had been leased to the Perth County Federation of Agriculture for about half that amount.

The citizen group seeking to save the hall plans to apply for government grants, rent out the facility for special events and find other ways to fundraise.
