Police are now saying that a 39-year-old male has died following a fire at an apartment building in south London.

The man was rushed to hospital with no vital signs after being discovered by fire crews in a basement unit at 140 Langarth St. West just north of Wharncliffe Road and Baseline Road.

Fire crews arrived on scene just before midnight responding to a report of a grass fire. However, once on scene it became clear to crews that the blaze was actually in a basement apartment within the two storey apartment complex.

A man was reportedly discovered unconscious within the unit and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released as next of kin will have to be notified.

No one else was injured in the fire and residents have been allowed back into their units. Damage to the apartment unit is set at $80,000.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is invesitgating the incident.
