Police have identified the construction worker killed in Wednesday’s collision in St. Thomas as Brian J. Daniel, 55.

The St. Thomas man was directing traffic at a construction site on the Highway 3 bypass at the Burwell Road overpass when he was struck and killed.

Police have arrested and charged the driver of the pickup truck, Benjamin Clayton Dickout, 45, of Malahide Township, with dangerous driving causing death.

At the scene of the tragedy, flowers and a small cross mark the site.

The OPP continue to ask motorists to slow down near construction sites.

"We need people to pay attention first and foremost.  When they see those big orange signs we need them to slow down and be able to anticipate stopping traffic and construction workers out there," says Const. Laurie Houghton.

It's not just construction crews that have to work on busy road. Police and tow truck operations also need drivers to be extra cautious.

Sean Irvine has operated a tow truck for almost a year and has had several close calls.

"There was a transport and he just flew right by me - maybe 12 inches away from my truck. It was close," he says.

"It affects everybody when people don't have the common courtesy to move over and be aware there are people out here that do this for a living. I got a family to go home to at night, too. I don't want anybody to get hurt on the job."

Police also remind drivers that speed fines are doubled when workers are present, meaning travelling 15 km/h over the limit can bring a fine of $95.
