Canadian Blood Services says the country's blood inventory is at critically low levels not seen since 2008.

The organization is appealing for donors of all types, and particularly those with type O and A blood.

Mark Donnison, Canadian Blood Services vice-president of donor relations, said in a statement, “Without the help of Canadians we may have difficulty meeting the expected hospital demand across the country. For patients, this may mean deferring elective or routine treatments."

The shortage is being blamed on extremely low attendance at blood donor clinics and a constant need for blood in recent months.

Lorna Warwick, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada senior national director, added, “We are calling on Canadians to donate blood today to ensure our system can help patients tomorrow.”

Canadian Blood Services says it is working closely with its partners within provincial and territorial health systems to ensure the safe and equitable supply of blood and blood products.
