A fire Friday night destroyed a home in south London.

The fire started in the chimney of the house on Westminster Drive about 7:30 p.m.

It quickly took over the chimney and roof and part of the ceiling was collapsing as the family escaped into the night.

“My dad and my friend were cleaning the chimney out this afternoon and they had just finished cleaning it out and that's when my dad went to the barn and saw the chimney on fire,” says an occupant of the home.

The large presence of emergency vehicles could be seen from across Highway 401 as firefighters continued to battle the blaze for hours.
