For the second time in two weeks a Hanover police officer has been injured during an arrest.
A 36-year veteran of the force suffered a fractured leg trying to arrest a theft suspect outside the Walmart in Hanover.
As police responded to a theft of liquor from an LCBO location, they were called for a theft in progress around 10 p.m. on Thursday.
Police say they got a call that a man was trying to steal a television.
After initially capture the suspect, he fled from police. Following a short foot chase there was a struggle during which the officer 'severely fractured' his leg.
He is currently at Victoria Hospital in London recovering.
The suspect, who suffered minor injuries in the altercation, was subdued by bystanders until police backup could arrive.
Police are thanking those who came to the aid of the officer, holding the suspect as well as providing first aid for the officer.
Chris Weber, 36, of Thunder Bay is facing 14 charges related to both theft incidents.
Charges include:
- two counts of theft under $5,000
- two counts of possession property obtained by crime under $5,000
- two counts of fail to comply with probation order
- fail to comply with recognizance
- escape lawful custody
- two counts of utter threats to cause death
- assault peace officer with intent to resist arrest
- resist arrest
- assault peace officer causing bodily harm
Weber was scheduled to make a court appearance Friday in Walkerton.
