Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau focused on "hard-working families and growing the middle class" in an early morning visit to London Wednesday.

He was greeted by more than 200 enthusiastic supporters at Goodwill Industries and while he had no new policy announcements, he used his first stop in London of this campaign to focus on his party's proposed Canada Child Benefit.

"We will use that money to lift 315,000 children out of poverty in this country," he said.

About 1.4 million families would qualify under the new plan.

On poverty issues and on the need to spend on infrastructure, Trudeau said his Liberals are aligned with the Ontario counterparts.

London North Centre MPP and Ontario Deputy Premier Deb Matthews was front and centre at the gathering.

"Whether it's building infrastructure or whether it's focussing on the success of kids in poverty, it's the responsible thing to do. Because making sure kids have the opportunity to achieve their full potential actaully is better fiscally, in the long run," she said.

Local Goodwill executive director Michelle Quintyn says whichever party leads the next government, more emphasis has to be put on getting people back to work.

"We've got to create the jobs; we need to invest in businesses. But then we need to invest in people, getting them into those jobs and making sure they stick," she said.
