A 52 year old Waterloo man is alive after a harrowing ordeal while canoeing near Long Point.

Just before 7 p.m. on Friday, emergency crews were called to Long Point Beach after a man in a 14’ canoe tipped over about a mile from shore of the Inner Bay.

The man was inappropriately dressed for the conditions and had no safety equipment on board.

Family members standing on the beach immediately contacted 911.

Norfolk County Fire Services responded with a Zodiac water rescue boat and were able to assist with bringing the man to shore.

He had been in the water for approximately 30 minutes and was suffering from hypothermia.

He was subsequently taken to a local area hospital where he was treated and released.

Police are warning boaters of all types to always have lifesaving equipment required on board their vessel.

The investigation is continuing
