BRAMPTON, Ont. - Peel Region police say an officer shot during a confrontation at a Toronto-area courthouse is in stable condition.

They say 53-year-old Const. Mike Klarenbeek was providing court security at the building in Brampton, Ont., when the incident took place at 11 a.m. this morning.

A spokesman for the force says Klarenbeek has been an officer for about 30 years.

Police say a man from Brampton entered the courthouse and fired at the officer.

After an interaction between the man and other officers, the man was shot and later pronounced dead.

Ontario's police watchdog is probing the incident.
