A Liberal candidate is a victim of crime and London police are investigating after racial slurs were painted on election signs.

About 10 signs for London-Fanshawe Liberal candidate Khalil Ramal have been defaced with slurs like "Arab scum" and another 20 have been burned or had Ramal's face cut out.

The signs have all been removed.

He says this has also happened to him in other campaigns and that it's sad it has happened again, especially in a country he is proud to call home.

"I came from Lebanon. I came here for peace and tranquility and I came because I was looking for a new life and I have it here," Ramal says.

Ramal immigrated to Canada from Lebanon in 1989 and was a Liberal MPP from 2003 until he was defeated in the 2011 Ontario election.

The defacing of the signs comes less than a week after other Ramal signs were torched in the area of Pond Mills Road and Bradley Avenue.

Other candidates have also reported burnt signs during this campaign.

"It's just the reality of an election campaign - signs get damaged," says NDP candidate Irene Mathyssen, who added that what happened to Ramal is upsetting.

I know that Londoners are better than that. The very few who might be offensive are in fact the very few."

Conservative candidate Suzanna Dielemena was also upset when she saw picture of the signs.

"I am really disappointed that that's there...and on his signs. It's really uncalled for and disrespectful. We are a multicultural country and a multicultural riding. This is uncalled for."

Ramal wants to focus on the election and not on the "stupidity and defacing" of his signs.

"This election is not about me. It's not about the Liberal party. It's about Canada and the people of this nation."
