Less than a day after a tense debate at London city hall over Uber, the ride-sharing company is looking to hire for a staff position in the city.
Tuesday night's debate over the possibility of regulating Uber was heated, but it appears the app is already planning to ramp up recruitment in the Forest City.
A motion to examine a creating a regulatory framework for Uber drivers in London passed 10-5 at the council meeting.
Councillor Paul Hubert, one of the votes against the motion, says, "I think it's really sticking a finger in the rule of law and I find it quite distressing."
Looking at a job listing on the Uber website for brand ambassadors in London to "spread the word about Uber and acquire new drivers," Hubert says it's apparent the company is set on moving forward despite the bylaws of the city.
"The people who are responding to this ad, are placing themselves in jeopardy of being charged under our bylaws," he says.
Wednesday afternoon, Uber released a statement on council's decision that read, "We're pleased with council's decision to move forward with a study of ride-sharing and look forward to continuing to work with them towards a new regulatory framework."
But regardless of regulations, Hubert is still skeptical that Uber will play by the rules.
"I have no confidence right now that they would comply with any bylaw. Past behaviour is the best predictor of future results."
As for the those who are in the taxi business, there was mixed reaction to the job posting from Uber, from fear to a wait-and-see attitude on regulations.
