Another two cases of a deadly pig virus have been confirmed and the illness has now spread to Perth County.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) has been found again in Chatham-Kent and also in Perth County.

This brings the total number of cases up to seven since Jan. 22.

At the same time, PED has been confirmed at three other locations; at a trucking yard, a processing plant and an assembly yard where pigs and their manure have previously been.

The discovery of PED in Perth is most alarming, as 282 producers call the county home - more than any other rural area in Ontario.

PED can be fatal to piglets, while older pigs can recover from the contagious disease.

The ministry says there’s no risk to the public or food safety.
