In 2014, health authorities in Grey-Bruce reported a 300 per cent increase in gonorrhea cases – and the area could be in line for something similar this year.
Twenty-five cases of the disease were reported to the Grey Bruce Health Unit last year, up from six in 2013.
A “similar pattern (is) developing for 2015,” the health unit said Thursday in a press release.
Health officials recommend that people who have unprotected sex or multiple partners visit their doctor at least twice a year for STI testing.
Similar increases in gonorrhea diagnoses have been reported in Waterloo Region and Wellington-Dufferin Guelph in recent years, with health officials saying people in their early 20s make up most of the increase.
