The expected loss of 49 educational assistants in a local school board has parents up in arms.

The Bluewater District School Board covering Grey and Bruce County is expected to approve the cuts at Tuesday night’s final budget meeting.

The board was amongst many in Ontario to receive less provincial money for special needs next year.

With $1.5 million less to spend on special education, the board says they’re going to eliminate 49 educational assistants for next September.

Parents of children that rely on those EAs are frustrated by the decision.

The Bluewater board says they’ve been overspending on special education for years and the cut in provincial funding forced them to make tough decisions.

There will still be 215 educational assistants for more than 1,100 high needs students across the board.
