As many turned out to mark Remembrance Day in London's Victoria Park, police presence was also greater than ever.
Donna Alexander was attending the ceremony and says "I'm happy that they're there to support us and keep an eye out for us. It's unfortunate that in this day and age we have to have that presence at this memorial service, but they're diligent and I'm glad they're there."
In light of the recent deaths of soldiers in Ottawa and Quebec, security was heightened at many ceremonies across the country, and in London uniformed and auxiliary officers could be seen on every block near Victoria Park.
London police Chief Brand Duncan says "I think the public wants to be assured that we can come out and pay respects to our fallen soldiers and our veterans and to do so in a way in which they feel safe and comfortable being here."
The Tactical Unit was also in position, far enough back in the neighbourhood to not be noticed, but close enough should duty call. An unusual, but not unwelcome presence.
Sheila Spears says "Well times are changing, as I say if they're on our side I'm really glad to see it."
MP Ed Holder says it's all part of a change in attitude since last month's deaths of two soldiers on Canadian soil.
"We've got more presence of everyone and perhaps the officers here are just an indication of we all want to do the right thing so we want to remember those who served, those who died and we want to do it in an environment that frankly for the crowd here today is safe."
In the end police say Remembrance Day security went off without incident.
