Two-month-old George Dumitru’s condition has stabilized, family members say, but he has yet to regain consciousness and doctors have told his family that his condition remains critical.
Dumitru was in the back seat of a car that was hit by an alleged impaired driver on Highway 7/8 near Trussler Road Sunday evening.
Also in the back seat was his 29-year-old mother, Susana Dumitru, who was killed.
In the front of the car were Susana Dumitru’s husband and mother-in-law, neither of whom were seriously injured.
Speaking to CTV News on Tuesday, Susana Dumitru’s cousin Ligia Grada said that family members in Canada and Romania were trying to stay strong for the Dumitrus, who had moved to Canada earlier this year.
“Right now it’s very hard to be positive,” she said.
Grada said that George Dumitru had gone through surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and come out of it in stable condition, but doctors have warned the family that things could change quickly with the baby boy.
“We’re not safe yet,” she said.
Kitchener resident Ahmed Darwish is accused of impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and other offences in connection with the crash.
He remains in custody with his next court appearance scheduled for Dec. 5.
