Where you live may determine the number of cats you're allowed to house.

A proposal going to the community and protective services committee on Monday would limit the feline quota to three per household on properties where there is more than one dwelling, such as an apartment building.

City staff are cautioning, though, that any change must not violate the Human Rights Code or other laws.

“As long as the ‘differentiation’ or ‘discrimination’ does not violate other law, such as the Human Rights Code or the Charter, then it is a valid exercise of the council’s bylaw making power,” a city report states.

Currently, each adult in a dwelling may have two cats, up until there are four cats per household.

Staff recommends that number be reduced to three unless you live in a single detached home, where the limit would be eight.

For those fostering animals, up to four cats could be housed at any one time and up to 10 in total on a temporary basis.
