The Middlesex-London Health Unit says flu activity is on the rise in the region and the first death from the flu this season has occurred.

Last week in London and Middlesex County there were 14 lab-confirmed influenza cases, of which six required hospitalization and one died.

So far this season, which began in Sept. 2015, the health unit says there have been a total of 46 flu cases, including 18 hospitalizations, but no outbreaks in the region.

Across the province, there have been 1,099 confirmed influenza cases since the start of the season, 263 hospitalizations and five deaths, all of whom were seniors.

Public Health Ontario also says the virus strains circulating in the province have been found to be similar to those included in this year's flu shot.
