Ontario Hydro crews are busy repairing hydro poles in the aftermath of a spring ice storm in midwestern Ontario that has left thousands without power.

At least 30 hydro poles were snapped or bent over in the Wroxeter area where Brussels Line will be closed until the repairs are complete.

Police say high winds and freezing rain overnight caused the downed power lines and damaged hydro poles, which along with fallen trees and branches, have caused widespread power outages.

The damage has trapped a number of people in their homes with no power or running water.

There are similar reports of damage and power outages across midwestern Ontario.

There is widespread damage in Perth County with numerous roads closed due to downed trees, hydro poles or wires including:

  • Road 119 between Line 44 and Line 46
  • Road 107 between Line 37 and Line 40
  • Road 107 between Line 52 and Line 56
  • Line 72 between Rd 140 and Line 147
  • Road 147 between Donegal and Britton
  • Line 55 in the town of Monkton

The Municipality of North Perth declared a local emergency on Friday afternoon due to the power outages and extreme weather.

There are concerns that heavy ice falling from trees and other structures as well as downed live electrical wires are serious hazards.

Warming centers are available at the Listowel Salvation Army and Elma Memorial Community Centre for the duration of the emergency.

The Township of Wellesley has also declared a state of emergency to ensure the well-being of residents.

Weather conditions are improving, but the township is concerned that damage to trees and power lines will continue.

A warming center has been opened at the Linwood Community Center.

In Wellington County, Wellington Road 12 between Wellington Road 109 and the 12th Line of Mapleton Township will be closed while dozens of downed hydro poles are repaired.

And in North Huron a warming centre has been opened at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex for those without power.

It is unclear when all power will be restored, residents can contact their local provider for details.
