Residents of Corunna have been given the all clear after being told to go inside, close all windows, doors, and turn off ventilation systems following a benzene gas emission at the Shell location in St. Clair Township.

Warning Sirens were heard around 6 p.m. after elevated benzene readings were noticed and the shelter directive was issued.

Shell officials say the actions were precautionary as they worked to find the source of the odour.

Provincial police were called into shutdown traffic in the area while crews worked to control the leak.

Shortly after 8 p.m. the all clear was given and roadways were reopened.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

The air around the refinery is being monitored and The Ministry of Environment has been notified.

No injuries have been reported in the incident.
