Students are starting to settle in at London's newest Catholic high school.

But the delayed traffic light installation outside St. Andre Bessette is causing serious concern from parents and students alike.

"Kids aren't watching, or they're walking too slow, and some cars come around the corner too fast," says one student.

"Since I've started here, every time I cross it's right here every morning and after school," he adds.

The front gate of the school exits to five lanes of traffic, on the other side are shops and popular lunch spots.

There isn't a crosswalk for about another 500 metres at Fanshawe Park Road and Hyde Park Road.

"Some cars don't even wait for you, sometimes you're halfway across and you start going and they''ll keep driving. Its quite scary actually," says one St. Andre Bessette pupil.

Students are trying to do the right thing by crossing at the intersection, it's the lights that are missing and even city officials feel they've dropped the ball.

"For future schools, we will make sure this doesn't happen, but for this school right now its a reality," said Councillor Matt Brown at Monday's Civic Works Committee meeting.

"We'll get the temporary solution done and we will also push to get the site plan agreed to, so that the permanent solution can go in earlier rather than later," said Mayor Joe Fontana.

A recommendation from the Civic Works Committee will have the mayor attempt to negotiate sharing the $50,000 cost for temporary lights between the city, school board, developer, and Smart Centres. But that won't happen for at least a month.

In the meantime, students say that's one month too long.

"It seems a bit silly to wait that amount of time to put it in, since it is something that's going to be needed everyday," says one student.
