A controversial plan to remove a wetland next to Highway 401 and build a shopping district is underway.

Trees were being cut down Friday and land levelled on Dingman Drive.

Last summer, city hall was wrapped up in a debate around whether to permit the development or preserve the wetland.

An agreement was reached between the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority and PenEquity Realty that was to see the wetland "re-created" nearby.

But Mayor Joni Baechler tells CTV News she believes the city will now receive no compensation for the tree removal.

The developer had originally offered to plant six trees for every one removed.
