Cuts to VIA Rail service in southwestern Ontario sparked a sit-in Thursday at the St. Marys train station.

St. Marys businessman Chris West has organized a sit in at the VIA station to protest cuts to several routes.

"We want more trains..plain and simple," says West.

West along with his fellow riders plan to be at the station every time a train rolls through until they can get an MP's attention.

"Public transportation is the way of the future, I mean it has to be, so we should be adding trains, not slashing them," says a passenger.

The protest comes as regional economic and political leaders gathered in London to discuss transportation woes.

The Southwest Economic Alliance has launched a petition, calling on federal and provincial governments to invest in inter-city transportation.

"From the provincial government, we're asking them to immediately begin the process of planning transportation in southwestern Ontario to the same level, the same level of activity that they did for the Greater Toronto Area. For the federal government we're asking them to stop any more cuts to VIA Rail," says protester Serge Lavoie.

The sit in may last for weeks or months, it depends on how long it takes for an MP in Ottawa to listen.
