OPP are reminding drivers to be cautious around school buses after a collision involving a bus and a motorcycle in Elgin County on Tuesday morning.

Police responded to Highway 3 east of Centennial Avenue shortly after 8 a.m. for the crash.

The bus reportedly exited a private drive on the south side of the road to go west in front of the motorcycle, which struck the rear portion of the bus.

The 64-year-old motorcycle rider from St. Thomas suffered moderate, non-life threatening injuries while the school bus driver, a 65-year-old St. Thomas man was not hurt. There were no students on board at the time.

Officials say there have been 38 crashes involving school buses so far this year, and if collisions continue at the same rate, there could be a record high number in 2015.

When encountering a stopped school bus with overhead red lights flashing, drivers are reminded to stop  - at least 20 metres away if approaching from behind the bus - and wait until the lights have stopped flashing.

Failure to do so could result in a fine of $400 to $2,000 for a first offence and $1,000 to $4,000 for subsequent convictions.
