Provincial police say there have been 129 road deaths so far this year, and so far speed is the leading factor in the fatal crashes.

As of June 21, OPP say speed was a causal factor in 28 deaths, distracted driving in 23 deaths and alcohol/drugs in 14 deaths.

Police are issuing a reminder about the death toll on OPP-patrolled roads ahead of Canada Day week festivities, when many people are expected to hit the road.

In a statement, OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair says preventing aggressive-driving related crashes is up to those behind the wheel.

“Safe drivers refrain from behaviours such as speeding, following too close, making unsafe lane changes and road rage – something drivers should never let influence their driving. We want to see all drivers adopt safe driving behaviours and take pride in the excellent example they set and for their contributions to helping us save lives on our roads."

Officers will be highy visible on roadways for the next week, as they conduct a campaign targeting agressive driving from June 26 to July 1.

OPP Chief Supt. Chuck Cox says, "Our investigations have revealed the same causal factors time and time again; aggressive driving, impaired driving, distracted driving and those who refuse to wear seatbelts."

Police will also be on the water and trails, encouraging boaters to wear life-jackets and off-roaders to wear helmets.
