Joanne Christian was presented with the London police’s Brian Young Award on Friday, for her efforts to bring an end to elder abuse in the community.

Christian has worked tirelessly on the issue of elder abuse and neglect for the last 14 years.

She was worked with a number of groups, including the Committee on Abuse and Neglect of Elders (CANE), Project SENIOR (Stop Elder Neglect In Our Region) and the Coalition to End Abuse of Older Adults.

Christian also assisted with the set-up of the Seniors Help Line and participated in the development of educational materials on elder abuse.

She says “It’s been my pleasure to work with Brian..to make a difference to help end the abuse…of older adults.”

The presentation took place at the Building an Age Friendly London conference being held at the Hellenic Centre.

The award was founded in 2008 in recognition of retired police inspector Brian Young’s commitment to ending abuse and neglect of older adults.

Young was on hand for the presentation and says “Elder abuse is such an important aspect of our community. We have to work to end it.”

The award recognizes and individual or group that supports a collaborative approach, uses proactive strategies, works to remove barriers faced by older adults and increases awareness regarding abuse.
