The return of very hot, humid weather to the London and Middlesex County area has prompted the medical officer of health to issue the region’s second heat alert of 2013.
Middlesex-London Health Unit officials say the alert comes into effect Monday morning and will continue until Thursday.
Environment Canada’s forecast calls for humidex values of 40 to 42 Monday, which is one of the Health Unit’s triggers for issuing a heat alert.
"The hot humid air will hang around our area for the next several days, so it’s important for people to remember there are certain precautions they need to take this week to cope with the heat,” said Iqbal Kalsi, manager of environmental health.
Kalsi added it is key to consider the extreme heat when planning daily activities or deciding whether or not it’s even necessary to even be outside.
“Staying hydrated and keeping cool are important things to build into your activities over the next few days,” said Kalsi. “We also suggest that people don’t over exert themselves while this alert is in effect.”
The health unit says anyone who finds they are suffering symptoms associated with extreme temperature conditions should seek medical attention immediately either by calling 911 or going to the nearest Emergency Department.
