TORONTO - Premier-designate Kathleen Wynne has formally asked Ontario's auditor general to broaden his examination of the Liberals' decision to cancel a gas plant in Mississauga just days before the 2011 election.

Wynne has written auditor general Jim McCarter asking that he add the cancelled gas plant in Oakville to his current probe of the Mississauga project, which was halted in mid-construction.

Wynne says she hopes the auditor's report can be completed "in a timely manner."

However, the Progressive Conservatives say the move is a stalling tactic to delay the report into the politically-motivated decision to cancel the Mississauga gas plant until after the spring budget.

An opposition-dominated committee asked the auditor to investigate the Mississauga cancellation before Premier Dalton McGuinty prorogued the legislature last October, effectively killing hearings set to begin the next day.

Wynne said during her leadership campaign that she wanted to get all the facts out about the decision to kill the two energy projects, which cost taxpayers at least $230 million.
