At Western University, there's a new response vehicle, one that could make a police cruiser jealous.

It's the first police force in Canada to make use of an electric motorcycle.

"We are achieving in excess of 150 km/h and we can go well in excess of 220 km/h on a charge. So, it's been pretty incredible for our campus police so far," says Sgt. Ryan Austin of Western's Campus Community Police Service.

While a first in our country, the bike has been used by some police forces in the U.S. since its introduction two years ago.

A key advantage for Western campus police to use an electric motorcycle is that an electric bike is so quiet, a suspect will rarely hear it approaching.

"It sort of sneaks up on people, and really this bike gets them to know, that really, our officers can be coming from anywhere," says Austin.

Students at Western are especially impressed.

"Especially for predators or people who try to target students," says Christian La Chute

The trial of the bike ends shortly.

If approved, it will return to campus permanently in 2014.
