A 27-year-old male inmate has died and another is in hospital after two men were found in medical distress at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC) Monday morning according to EMS officials.

EMS and fire crews were called to EMDC just after 7 a.m. for a report of two men without vital signs.

Once on scene paramedics found one man without vital signs, the other man had a pulse.

Nurses from EMDC were performing CPR on the men.

An EMS official says that neither of the men had any apparent physical injuries.

One man has since been pronounced dead at LHSC.

The second inmate remains in stable condition at the hospital.

London Police Service Major Crime Section continues to investigate.

Police say there was no evidence of trauma to either individual and foul play is not suspected at this time.

There have ben eight deaths at EMDC since 2007.

Monday's incident comes three years after Adam Kargus was found dead in the washroom at EMDC on Nov. 1, 2013.

The 29-year-old Sarnia native was serving a 90-day sentence when he was killed.

Kargus’ cellmate Anthony George was charged with second-degree murder.
