A 17-year-old male was unconscious as he was pulled from the water Tuesday afternoon at Long Point Beach after struggling in the waves.

Police were called to the area off Beach Lane about 3:20 p.m.

Norfolk OPP Const. Ed Sanchuk says the teen, from Brantford, was swimming with five friends and was trying to leave the water, but went under.

"He disappeared under the water. The waves were three to four feet high."

Sanchuk says witnesses observed the male was face down in the water for about three minutes. He was pulled from the water and two off duty nurses CPR.

"They detected a heart beat at the hospital. That's good news. Our prayers and thoughts are with the youth," Sanchuk says.

“We are urging all Ontarians to take personal responsibility for ensuring water safety for themselves and their children which include:basic safety practices such as learning to swim at an early age; wearing a lifejacket or a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) while on a vessel or swimming.

"Young children or non-swimmers should always wear a PFD while in the water in case they become in distress. This can make the difference between surviving, or not."
