Two men have been arrested and a 48-year-old man is in critical condition after a severe beating at a St. Thomas residence.

Several people were drinking on the front porch of an Alma Street house on Thursday. St. Thomas police say an argument erupted and the victim was severely beaten and dragged down the sidewalk about 38 metres, where the assault continued.

The accused men dropped the victim and left him unconscious on the sidewalk after a witness intervened, according to police.

Police and paramedics were called around 11:30 p.m. They found the victim unconscious with severe injuries to his head, ribs and spine.

He was taken to the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital where he was treated and transported to the London Health Sciences Centre-Victoria Campus Intensive Care Unit.

He suffered severe trauma and was in critical condition, but police say he is expected to live.

Robert Hyatt, 40 and Craig LaFrance, 26, both of St. Thomas, have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

They are scheduled to appear in court Friday.

The investigation is continuing and police ask that anyone with information contact the St. Thomas Police Service at 519-631-1364.
