The results of more blood tests on two patients at the London Health Sciences Centre suspected of having Ebola have come back negative.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit says the results of tests on blood samples taken Friday morning have ruled out the possibility the mother and child have Ebola.

Dr. Chris Mackie, medical officer of health at the health unit, says, “These test results confirm that the two patients who have been under investigation for the last several days do not have Ebola Virus Disease. The risk of infection had been small from the beginning, yet it was necessary to take all the precautions we could until Ebola could be completely ruled out.”

The two patients, who arrived at LHSC on Tuesday night from Kitchener-Waterloo, were discharged from Victoria Hospital on Friday, the health unit says.

The pair arrived in Canada as refugees from Guinea, but from an area where Ebola is not present.

LHSC was designated as an Ebola treatment facility by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care last year.

Murray Glendining, hospital president and CEO, says he is happy with the level of preparedness and the reaction of staff to the situation.

“The compassion shown by the health care team caring for these patients has been exemplary. I would like to thank staff and leadership, both clinical and non-clinical, as well as our public health and provincial partners, who worked closely together to ensure that this situation was managed safely and effectively. We are relieved that the results of testing are negative, and wish the patients good health moving forward.”
