The clock is ticking for about 150 public health nurses in London, who could be on strike as of midnight.

Negotiations are continuing between the Ontario Nurses' Association and officials with the Middlesex-London Health Unit and there is still hope a deal can be reached.

Talks for a new contract started in May with the main issues being pay and benefits.

With flu season starting, local pharmacies say they're prepared to take on extra patients who may be looking for a flu shot in the event of a strike.

Vishal Mehta, manager of a Rexall Pharmacy, says "As far as I know, all of our Rexall's have received a substantial amount of the vaccine in anticipation of what may or may not happen tomorrow."

He says manpower could be an issue, but extra help can be called in if needed.

In addition to providing flu shot clinics, public health nurses also provide care like family planning, breastfeeding, baby support, home visits and prenatal and parenting classes.

It's unclear if there are any back-up plans in place for those services.
