Huron County OPP have charged an 18-year-old Goderich man after several small fires, a theft and a hoax phone call.

The male was arrested Monday after police investigated several deliberately set small fires over the weekend.

Early in the morning on Friday, Saturday and Sunday police and fire crews responded to Cove Road for fires set in trees and shrubs, then a grass fire and then two garbage cans set alight. There was minor damage.

Then around 4 p.m. Sunday, police were called to a Goderich restaurant after a small fire was discovered and then extinguished by staff.

Following in investigation, police found the male who allegedly set the fire was also believed to have stolen cash from the restaurant.

In addition, the same male allegedly called police on Sept. 27, falsely reporting he had been stopped by someone impersonating a police officer. The claim was found to be a hoax.

As a result, the 18-year-old from Goderich has been charged with four counts of arson, public mischief and theft under $5,000.

Police say he was released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for November.
