Members of the public interested in visiting the world's largest operating nuclear site will get that opportunity this summer.

Bruce Power will be opening its doors by offering bus tours as part of ongoing outreach efforts "to provide information to the public on the important role of nuclear power in Ontario."

The one-hour tour of the Bruce Power site in Tiverton, Ont. will include:

  • a view of Douglas Point, Canada’s first commercial-sized nuclear plant
  • a drive past the multi-unit Bruce A and Bruce B nuclear stations, which generate over a third of Ontario’s electricity
  • a look at a number of extensive security elements that protect both stations

Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power's president and CEO, said in a statement “Bruce Power is the world’s largest operating nuclear facility and we believe there is a significant public interest in seeing what exists here on site...I am sure there will be a high level of interest and we look forward to showcasing this impressive facility. ”

But not everything will be included in the tour, like the eight CANDU reactors at the site.

“Although we can’t take the tours into the security-protected nuclear generating stations, we believe visitors will enjoy a site tour and will learn much more about the role the Bruce Power site plays in Ontario’s energy security, now and for the long term,” Hawthorne added.

The program will run Wednesdays and Thursdays in July and August at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Those interested can call the Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre at 519-361-7777 or email info@brucepower.com to make a reservation.

Interested participants will be required to meet a number of requirements. Additional details will be made available in May.
