OPP are investigating after a VIA Rail passenger train struck railroad ties that had been placed on the tracks in St. Marys.
Police responded to the Goderich Exeter Railway line behind the Shur Gain plant at 600 James St. S. shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday.
That's where the Toronto to London VIA Rail passenger train, with two coach cars, had struck railroad ties that had been placed on the tracks.
The train did not derail and no one was injured, but the incident caused minor damage to the engine. Still, the train was able to continue its run with only a minor delay.
Investigators say the ties were placed there sometime between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday and call the situation, "not a joke but a serious criminal act," due to the possibility of derailment, injury and major damage.
Anyone who may have seen something or someone suspicious near the tracks on Sunday is asked to contact Perth County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
