London Police and the OPP peacefully ended the standoff at 113 Madison Ave. around 11 a.m. Tuesday.
"Our hope would have been that it would have been resolved quickly," London police Const. Steeves says.
"But I mean we can't rush a situation such as this, especially when there's thought or potential for someone to be armed and someone who has addressed that he's prepared to use force if need be."
Police say Peter Muir was arrested on an outstanding warrant for breach of probation.
The standoff, which follwed a sheriff attempting to evict Muir from the southeast end home, lasted about 24 hours.
As the time dragged on, the OPP TRU Team, negotiators and command staff arrived on scene Tuesday morning to help relieve London police officers.
Steeves says, "We had our uniformed members, our street patrol officers, we also had our Emergency Response Unit, we had negotiators, we had an incident commander and with time we had the services of the Ontario Provincial Police as well."
The area had been cordoned off and negotiations with the 46-year-old - who was known to police - had continued around the clock.
The man called the CTV London tipline around 1 p.m. Monday and indicated that police had surrounded his home, and he believed they would break down his door to remove him from the residence.
He also said he had a crossbow that he used for hunting, but that has not been confirmed.
Ernie Maiorana knew Muir when he was a kid and says, "I can't believe this is happening to him, because he's such a nice young man. He just hasn't had the opportunities other people had...I just wish the kid could get his life together."
Area residents called him a "nice guy" and said they were "glad things worked out."
Investigators remained at the scene Tuesday afternoon to search for weapons. It remains unclear if any additional criminal charges will be laid as a result of the standoff.
