St. Thomas police have confirmed the presence of the synthetic drug carfentanil in the city.

Following several overdoses in the city, police sent a sample away to Health Canada for analysis.

It has been confirmed the drug in question is carfentanil.

Police say carfentanil is 100 times more potent than the fentanyl patch and it cannot be detected by taste, smell, or sight.

It looks similar to table salt.

The drug is designed to sedate large animals such as elephants.

Tiny amounts of the drug, as little as a single microgram can adversely affect humans.

Police are warning users that other drugs have been laced with carfentanil such as fentanyl and heroin.

Carfentanil was confirmed to be present in Ontario on Tuesday.
