Ukrainian Canadians in London are coming together to provide emotional and economical support to their native land.

A memorial and prayer service for those whose lives have been lost during the fighting in Ukraine was held Sunday at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on King Edward Avenue.

“I can't stop crying and worrying about the Ukraine because what's happening there is a catastrophe,” says Svitlana Talashok.

Talashok and her young family are new Canadians who are worried about their family back home in Ukraine, such as her brother, who has been called up to the army.

“My brother will be there. I am worried about this of course, but I know they have to do it because this is their country. If they do not protect it, nobody will.”

About 40 people took part in today's church service and memorial and all were worried about the situation in Ukraine.

“Really broken hearted. This doesn't have to happen. We're peaceful. We have nothing against the Russians; we just want our own country. I don't think anyone should interfere. I think we should be able to govern ourselves and live peacefully with our neighbours,” says Vivian Koschmann.

Members of the church are doing what they can to help, including raising money to send back to Ukraine to purchase medical supplies which are desperately needed.

A trust fund has been set up through the Ukrainian Credit Union on Adelaide Street.

Many expressed frustration they are unable to directly help their loved ones back home, but there are plenty of encouraging words and prayers.
