Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement ahead of the weekend due to the possibility of heavy rainfall.

Most of southern Ontario is likely to see significant rain this weekend, including London and the surrounding counties.

The weather system comes just days after severe thunderstorms cut across southern Ontario early Tuesday morning leaving flooding and downed trees in its wake.

The forecaster says a low pressure system will arrive Saturday bringing rain and cooler temperatures across the region.

The rain could be quite heavy at times and in some areas the rain may continue through Sunday.

Areas from Windsor to the Golden Horseshoe could see rainfall amounts in the 30 to 60 millimetre range. Central and Eastern Ontario could see amounts from 20 to 40 millimetres.

Northeasterly winds are also expected to develop Saturday with gusts as high as 70 km/h. The strongest winds will be in areas along the Lower Great Lakes.
