After reaching a nearly eight year low in June the local unemployment rate climbed in July as more people returned to the labour force.

Statistics Canada is reporting that the London-St. Thomas jobless rate has climbed to 6.3%, that's up from 5.9% in June.

Though the jobless rate increased London remains below the national average of 6.8% and the provincial rate which fell 0.1% to 6.5%.

At this time last year the jobless rate for London-St. Thomas sat at 7.7%, a difference of 1.4%.

Factors that could lead to a rise in unemployment is more people returning to the work force.

Statistics Canada says London added roughly 2.500 jobs in July, but the labour force grew by 3,800 people.

Nationally the country added 6,600 jobs, but according to Stats Can  there were 17,300 fewer Canadians with full-time jobs in July compared with June but 23,900 more who had part-time employment.
