As job fairs are being held for The Bull & Barrel Urban Saloon set to open on Talbot Street in October, the restaurant is troubling some.
The Bull & Barrel describes itself as bringing "authentic country to a whole new level" and will include a roof top patio, mechanical bull and live entertainment.
The restaurant is looking to fill 40-60 positions including managers, bartenders, servers, kitchen staff, barbacks, security, singers and professional dancers.
That last position combined with a promotional video is of concern to the head of the London Abused Women's Centre.
Executive director Megan Walker says, "We know from the videos they do the dancing on the bars, they are dressed very, very provocatively...So why is that Tourism London - Tourism London of all places - would now promote a bar that exploits women, young women, and refers to them as 'bull girls?'"
But John Winston, Tourism London's general manager, says the organization's announcement was made simply to inform the community of a new investment downtown and of job opportunities.
“It is not for us to judge their business model or who they employ and for what purpose...We would be the first to disassociate our organization from this enterprise if there was even a hint of impropriety or malfeasance.”
Still, Walker isn't the only one concerned. Councillor Tanya Park says in a statement, “Based on what I’ve seen in the promotional video this establishment does not seem to support the shared values we have as Londoners. This is an establishment which I will not be bringing my family to.”
But Andrew Corbett, the owner of the new Bull & Barrel location in London, says half the staff at the restaurant's Windsor location are men, and he's looking for dancers of both genders.
"And then throughout the night they perform professional, choreographed dance routines to different country songs or line dances. It's all family fun."
He adds that their attire is what you'd see at any other country bar or concert - jeans, cowboy boots, hats - and just one of 15 dances is performed on the bar to encourage patrons to participate.
The fairs are being held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Budweiser Gardens' King Club at Dundas and Talbot streets.
