A couple in London was overjoyed after learning they’d won the Lotto 6/49 jackpot of $17.4 million in Saturday’s draw.

Malvin Knight, 73, and Audrey Gill, 60, were in Toronto on Tuesday to pick up their cheque from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.

The couple, who have been together for 18 years, are regular quick pick players of Lotto 6/49.

But they almost missed buying their ticket on Saturday as they watched a hockey game.

Gill said in a statement, “It was the end of the first period when I suddenly realized that I had not bought our 6/49 ticket yet. So I ran out to the store with only minutes left.”

At Mac’s Trafalgar, Gill checked an earlier ticket and used the $5 winnings to purchase a new ticket.

On Sunday morning Knight said he heard screaming coming from the kitchen and found Audrey with tears in her eyes. Together they rechecked the numbers and planned their trip to pick up the prize money.

The couple plan to help their combined four children and nine grandchildren with the winnings.
