A dog has died as a result of a fire in a multi-unit residence in east London Sunday evening.

Emergency crews responded to the fire at 785 Nelson Street around 7:15 p.m.

Extensive smoke could be seen coming from building and firefighters had to rescue a man trapped on the roof.

The man was taken to hospital with minor injuries including smoke inhalation.

A pet dog in one of the apartments died in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but fire officials say it appears the blaze started on the main floor.
