London police say they have made an arrest in connection with the reported abduction of two girls in London's south end.

Dieu V. Chau, 44, of London, has been charged with two counts of abduction of a person under 14, sexual assault and sexual interference.

Police are thanking the public for providing information that helped with the investigation.

Det.-Insp. Kevin Heslop says the calls helped verify information that the force had.

He also says surveillance played a role.

"Certainly we have looked at everything. We've looked at the routes that they travelled, which were significant over the course of that evening. We've looked at video surveilance from different locations.

"We've looked at everything including forensic sciences so there are a number of things that pulled this matter together. It was no one thing so as a result of everything coming together the arrest was made today."

Heslop says the girls involved are receiving help from social agencies and the victim services unit with the London police.

The arrest is connected to an incident that began around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 24.

Police say a nine-year-old girl and 11-year-old girl were walking in the area of Southdale Road and Adelaide Street south when they were approached by a male driving a vehicle - who they did not know.

According to police, the girls were enticed into the vehicle and driven to Springbank Park where they walked in the area of Storybook Gardens and the wading pools before returning to the vehicle and getting fast food in the area of Wellington and Commissioners Roads shortly before 10 p.m.

They then reportedly drove back to Springbank Park to eat before being driven back to the area where the girls had been picked up, where one of the girls was dropped off.

The other girl was then taken to an unknown location, police say, where she was sexually assaulted before being driven back to the area of Southdale Road and Adelaide Street and dropped off.

Police say aspects of the investigation are ongoing and that the suspect is known to them.
