The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is asking for help tracking cases of problems in the home health care system in southwestern Ontario.

They are asking people to call a new hotline to share their stories and issues.

CUPE, which represents health care workers who provide at-home care, announced the new initiative in London on Tuesday.

New criteria to qualify for access to the system along with budget cuts in Community Care Access Centres mean that more people are being turned away from home health care, according to CUPE Ontario's president Fred Hahn.

He says that health care funding and cuts cannot be broken down into just numbers.

"The reality of those numbers is that behind them there are real people and their lives and real stories and we think that those stories and their lives have real power. So we want to collect those stories and use them as a way to pressure government to do the right thing, to fund home care in a way that will allow people to receive the suports they need."

The union says there are hundreds of ill, elderly or socially isolated people in London, Grey-Bruce and other southwestern Ontario communities who aren't getting the home care they need.

Last year, the Southwest Community Care Access Centre saw a 33 per cent increase in referrals for services.

The call in number is 1-888-599-0770.
